Career 2.0 Squared FAQs
-
The Squares refers to the cycle of change as developed by Dr. Martha Beck. In our westernized culture we espouse action above all else. The change cycle, or the Squares, shows us that change has four distinct phases or “Squares”. The first is a period of death where we lose an identity, the second is the time to dream where we can find a direction and orient towards it, the third is the time of taking great and consistent action in the external world to create the dream. Eventually we reach the fourth phase, or Square, which is the Promised Land of a Career 2.0 that fulfills us. A refresher on the Squares can be found here: www.serenaklal.com/video

A ‘Career 2.0’ is a career that supports you and your dependents while also fulfilling you, bringing you purpose and meaning.

Possibly. When we are in Square four or the Promised Land of our Career 1.0 we can still do some Dreaming work that happens in Square Two. This can help us move out of our Career 1.0.

Yes the Squares do seem obvious once we know them. And if you feel stuck or as if there are no good options it’s possible you may not be moving through them. For instance, sometimes people try to skip Square One by jumping into taking action too quickly before they are emotionally neutral. Then they conclude that their ideal career path isn’t ideal. Another example is skipping Square Two by going straight to what is “reasonable” and “rational". This might seem responsible but it often keeps people paralyzed because the path forward that the rational mind has found isn’t something that pulls them forward. And finally in Square Three often people underestimate how difficult it can be to create their dream Career 2.0 so they give up on it. These are all reasons why the Squares while obvious are often steps we evade.
